Culture though the Lens of Language- KAIROS Blanket Session

The Blanket Exercise is based on using Indigenous methodologies and the goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy.

Welcome to Our Homelands from Indigenous People: Introducing a Reconciliation Awareness LINC Lesson for Newcomers

Teaching about the pain-filled history of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada can be difficult. LINC teachers grapple with how to tell the truth appropriately and respectfully without glossing over atrocities and yet not leaving newcomers traumatized. They also need to blend content with real world task goals and language assessment. This session introduces IRCC-funded reconciliation awareness LINC lessons for Literacy-CLB 8 that center on the Welcome to Our Homelands video and study guide by Indigenous artists. Participants learn about and get access to the content covered, the activities and PBLA tasks.
These materials are designed for the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) English program and include tools for Portfolio-Based-Based Language Assessment (PBLA). However, as the materials are primarily content-based, they may be used by other publicly-funded organizations, programs or facilitators who want to provide an introduction to the rich diversity of the Indigenous peoples of these lands as well as the devastating historical events and injustices that continue to shape their current realities.

The language used to talk about gender diversity in English can be confusing and seems to always be in flux. It is hard enough to know what to say when English is your first language. Keynote Session - Changing the Frame of Canadian Education: From (Celebratory) Multiculturalism to (Integrative) Anti-racism

Although provinces are responsible for education, multiculturalism has for many decades been the dominant frame for considering and addressing social and cultural diversity and the goal of educational equity and social justice. Alternatives do exist and either have existed about as long as multiculturalism (e.g. interculturalism in Quebec) or have emerged (e.g. anti-racism in 1990s Ontario and in present day British Columbia) as a preferred frame.  In this paper, I will recommend anti-racism as a preferred frame for overall education and individual teachers’ pedagogy. Rather than dismiss multiculturalism, I will (re)define it as existing on a continuum (with liberal, celebratory multiculturalism being dominant) and articulate its utility as a social justice oriented approach to education in general and pedagogy more specifically. I will do the same for anti-racism and through the comparison, will allow the anti-racism (especially integrative anti-racism or anti-racism within an anti-oppression frame) to emerge as a more utilitarian and effective frame for equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI) and social justice in and through education.
